Optimum has invested £450,000 in a new freeform production line facility and AR coating equipment at its laboratory in Morecambe. The investment will increase the company’s production capacity and is expected to create eight new jobs.

Sales Director Mark Marland said: ‘We have been manufacturing and supplying lenses for over ten years. However increasing our freeform capability takes the business to a new level and is a great step forward for the team. It’s given us the opportunity to enhance our portfolio of in-house lenses and we can now produce and dispatch complex and high prescription lens orders the same day if required.

‘In addition, the new AR coating facility will allow us to further enhance our coating range and service, and enable us to further exceed our current coating turnaround time which averages just 1.4 days.’

Since acquiring Optimum Coatings in 2010, Managing Director Paul Bailey has successfully transformed the company from a contract coating service provider into a technology-led, ‘one-stop’ manufacturing and coating facility that supplies eyewear retailers and optical laboratories across the UK.

Mr Bailey said: ‘Sales have tripled since 2010 and show no sign of slowing which is why we’re making such a significant investment in our future. The new equipment will allow us to both satisfy increasing demand from existing clients and win new business. We are planning to double our sales turnover over the next three years as a result.

‘Investing in our people has been just as important as equipment. We have recruited 10 people in the last 24 months, and we expect to employ a further eight by the end of April. We’re also proactively providing career development for our apprentices and we’ve enhanced our management training programme.’
